The Shaka Sign means Hello, Goodbye and Thank you
Who made the shaka sign that locals show off whereby making a fist, then sticking your thumb and pinkie out and waving it side to side while your knuckles are facing outward?
The story traces back when a man named Hamana Kalili worked at Kahuku Sugar Mill. He was a Hawaiian fisherman from the town of Laie. His job as a presser was to feed cane through the rollers to squeeze out its juice. One day, Kalili’s right hand got caught in the rollers, and his middle, index and ring fingers were crushed.
Because he could no longer work in the mill, Hamana became a security guard on the sugar train that used to travel between Sunset Beach and Kaaawa. Part of his job was to prevent kids from jumping on the train and taking joyrides as it slowly approached and departed Kahuku Station.
He was always trying to keep kids off of the train and they would mock his gesture, the shaka to tell each other that the coast was clear to jump on.
Other positive meanings of the shaka include: “Hang loose,” “Right on,” “Thank you,” “Take it easy” “Wassup brah” “Howzit going?”
Mahalo
This word has many special meanings from thank you, having gratitude and showing respect to others.
We say it often in forms such as, “Mahalo for your support!” “Mahalo nui loa” which is thank you very much. “Aloha and Mahalo” which is hello and goodbye and thank you.
When you visit Hawaii, be sure to say the word “mahalo” and you will see that people may smile and say, “you’re welcome” or give you the ‘shaka’ sign.
Whenever the news is filming in public, they like to show clips of people enjoying their day and may ask you to show your shaka on TV. So you make your best shaka sign, have a big smile and shake your shaka sign back and forth!
